Underwater lights for night fishing

Been reading about night fishing with underwater lights. Anybody use these in either saltwater or freshwater? Do they work? And brands or sizes (output) better than others? I fish primarily for stripers on lakes Wateree and Murray.

We use them offshore for sword and kings…work very well

do you prefer one brand, size or color over others? I’ve heard of the Hydroglow light but don’t know enough about it to base a decision. These things seem to be a bit pricey, so I want to do it right the first time.

If you can afford the hull mounted LED’s that is the way to go.

blue and green seem to draw bait the same

I use a hydroglow all the time on lake Murray while striper fishing. It works pretty good in the spring and summer.

Thanks. Since no one mentioned another brand, I guess I’ll get a 4’ Hydroglow and give it a try this Spring. Looks like a good way to net some bait if nothing else.

i have used small hydroglows on overnights in hudson canyon. work well enough out there for squid and swords… so should be awesome for inshore. if you are running it off your boat battery, make sure to check the current draw. some brands suck a lot of juice, so mabe check for LED version.

Will the hydro glows draw enough bait to draw the stripers in?
I have had problems in the past when using only the hydro glows. It usually takes the generator and more lights for me to have any success. But maybe that’ just my luck.
I sure would like be able to leave the generator at home and still catch stripers

4JS, when you use a generator what type or brand of light do you use? I’m sure it’s a dock light that runs off ac, but there has to be some rule of thumb about intensity and I’m sure there has to be brands preferred and used by serious fishermen. My stepson has a friend who catches big stripers off his dick with a homemade underwater light, but he wants over $300 to make one for other people. I was hoping to avoid such an outlay, which would be significant since I would also have to buy a generator to operate it off my boat.

Don’t think that I want to try that.

Dock! He catches big stripers off his dock! Can’t blame that one on auto correct. Actually, I was just testing to see if anybody was reading this thread.

I want to catch big strippers

You have to have a big dock to catch big stripers…

I catch plenty of stripers under my hydroglow. But if someone pulls up with a generator and HPS lights in the general area they are worthless.

Check out these lights:

Or if you like to tinker, build your own.

the hydro glo works fine as long as no other big high pressure lights are around. i find the blue back will run well under the shad. the shad will be on the surface. i also have a seperate battery to run the hydroglo on. i would suggest a dc powered light, instead of the ac which will require a gererator. it is nice to be quiet sometimes.hope this will help. i fish deep water on lake hartwell and the hill.

:sunglasses: we typically use a 1100 watt honda generator, very quiet, w/ 100 watt “clamp on” lights spread out around the boat… 8 - 10 lights most of the time. We will use the hydro glows too and it seems to attract more.

A friend is outfitting a new boat and we are looking at using LED lights…

Next time I go with only the hydro glows, I’ll try setting up away from other boats with generators if that is possible.

Thanks, guys. I’ll definitely order some sort of underwater light that I can run on dc. If I like it, I may spring for a generator and the more powerful ac light. Just want to test the whole concept out before sinking big bucks. I’ve only fished with lights (the surface type) once and got skunked. Hope the underwater variety will work better. Now if it would just warm up a bit…

hahaha gotta love the autocorrect! almost spit out my coffee
