ran all the way up past the 41 bridge and once we slowed down to start throwing for bait the gnats and noseeums about carried us off they were so bad. I’ve never seen gnats as thick as we did today. Literally could not even get bait they were so bad. Kids running around the boat screaming slapping their heads… ended up throwing in the towel and heading back. We all got a good laugh about it afterwards.
Same with us… We ran all the way back home to grab a can of bugspray

They must have been everywhere…I fished pitt street pier early morning but around 11:00 I got chased out by the gnats.
“In every species of fish I’ve angled for, it is the ones that have got away that thrill me the most, the ones that keep fresh in my memory. So I say it is good to lose fish. If we didn’t, much of the thrill of angling would be gone.” Ray Bergman
Well, now I don’t feel so bad. My son and I were getting eaten alive (him more than me) and he wanted to call it. I got mad at him until I saw hundreds off tiny red marks all over his face and neck. Had no bug spray but have now added to my bag. There was absolutely no breeze so the noseeums had an open flight path. First time I recall wishing for some wind.
add 1 more…i got torn up on base during that time!
They have been bad in the upper wando all last week and this weekend. Even when there was some wind they found places to hide around my boat and when the wind let up started feeding again.
Sunday was unbearble on the water - the trout bite kept me out there, but I paid the price - even w/ bugspray, which didn’t seem to do anything to keep them blood suckers away. I tought it was bad in the woods, but this is just crazy! Come on Fall already…
