I’m not positive this was a Manatee and my picture didn’t come out to good. It was either that or a small hippo. After reading up on them it seems a little odd for it to be this far north with our water temps dropping? Any thoughts? It also didn’t look fully grown.
The unremarkable picture will have to wait till I get home to the computer. Also this sighting was about 200 yards up river of the Hwy 41 bridge on the right.
I’ve either seen one twice or two down here in Beaufort earlier this year. They are around. The SCDNR tracks these guys you should reort your sighting.
I have seen them in Shem Creek. I would expect any around here would be heading south as fast as they can. My understanding is that they do not like water under 72. We’re probably not there yet but should be shortly.

be careful or you will end up w a new no wake zone up there.
Amen to that, be real careful. Years ago I was the service manager at Landings Harbor Marina on Skidaway Island. We had 2 manatee come into the harbor one day and they were swimming around the docks. I called DNR to report them, and they came out and CLOSED the marina down! No boats in, no boats out until the manatee decided to leave, 4 days later [:I]
Let me tell you, the marina director was so angry that he almost fired me! After that he gave standing orders that nobody better make any more manatee reports.

after the show I watched on Discovery Channel the other day, I am betting it was just an overweight mermaid. Apparently - they are real… must be, they did a show about it.
