Is there anywhere in Charleston that has used outboard parts for sale?
I have a '88 OMC 48 SPL that needs a starter. Engine is old and I don’t know if it runs but I do know the starter is dragging. Tried cleaning the old starter with no luck so I need to find one that works. Hoping to see if I can get the motor running and see what I have before putting any big dollars into it.
Take the starter to an Auto-electric shop and get them to rebuild it. That’s usually cheaper than buying a new one and more reliable than buying a used one.
What Tigerfin said. A starter is a starter and any good starter shop can fix it. I can recommend 2 in the Savannah area, don’t know Charleston enough but there is sure to be a starter and alternator repair shop.

Thanks guys for the reply but I’ve already cracked the case on it, cleaned it, and the guts are fried. I can buy a new off brand for $50 online however this motor is more of a gentleman’s bet than a legit project at this point. If I can find a used starter that works I should have all i need to put the bet to rest and the budget for the wager is sparse.
You can wrap a line around the flywheel and pull start it to determine the condition, measure compression and see if it will start and run, before you buy a starter. There ain’t much to pull starting 48 hp… I’ve done it with 200.

She spins up just fine with the plugs out. Compression is good on both holes. When you put the plugs back in the starter lugs against the compression and doesn’t have enough ass in it’s pants to turn the motor over with enough authority to get her spooled up. Inside of the housing looks like the boat was run with the Bendix stuck up. She’s fried even though she still spins with a light load.
I’m just wondering if there’s anywhere nearby that has old dusty bins full of old dusty antique OMC parts for crusty old antique OMC’s that they part with for reasonable money.
there’s a place on virginia ave @ 526 that has some salvage stuff. i can’t find the name. you can see the sign from 526. its’s on lincoln ave beside Elite Towing
The shop on Virginia Ave has a lot of parts however what they charge is sort of on the “if you have to have it today” end of the price range. You can usually do better online if you’re willing to wait a few days for delivery.
Not sure what a rebuild shop charges but I’ve rebuilt more than one starter in the past, I’ve had this one apart, did what I usually do to get them cleaned up and working, and this one is too far gone.
To put it in perspective, this motor was sitting in the woods and I got it for free. The old rule of “there are no free boats or motors” holds true and I’m not inclined to throw good money at what could be a bad project.
It comes down to a bet. I have a friend who is a diehard OMC guy and he bet me that the motor would work. It’s my motor and I bet against him that it’s toast. It’s a friendly yamaha vs omc bet between friends.
If I get it running I’ll spend the money for a new starter but for now this is all just for fun… on a low budget.
