I am currently in the market for a used Yamaha 50hp 2 stroke. I have found a 2000 model without oil injection. It has compression from top to bottom at 124-116-123. Would this be worth a hard look? It has no controls or propeller. The asking price is down to $1,500. The compression is within the 10% range, just not sure about the middle cylinder at 116. Any suggestions? Thanks.
I would not be concerned about the compression; It is well within. Factors: compression should be checked once engine is at operating temperatures, If it has not ran in a while cylinder walls could be dry not letting compression build. If you do purchase run ring free through fuel on your first outing (shock), or decarbonize. Yamahas run cooler than other outboards, therefore carbon build up is more common.
