Using cast net for herring...

Where would be a good spot to cast for bait? The bait store is closed around 7pm and I don’t get off work until 7:30. Is it a good place to use cast net to catch herring around the dam area? Thanks.

sometimes you can pull them up to lights around the dam, but it seems hit or miss for me. If you can find a dock with some bright lights on the water that can be good. A lot of times I can get threadfin shad but not herring. But most will pass through the mesh on a 1/2" mesh net.

the last time i was out which was the last week in aug. herring were starting to come to the top (at night)with out lights and i was able to catch them with a sabiki rig. common sense tells me the striper were pushing them up but i was even doing some blind casting and just jigging for the herring and was able to catch some. if you can catch any bait fresh you will catch more fish than the people with bought bait.

Beside herring, can you use any artificial lure that works? What do you do if the fish don’t bite? Sometime, I see fish on my FF and I believe I have my line at the right depth, but it did not work.

Mepps Comet #3 and Rebel or Rapale silver deep diving minnows. Fish above them since their eyes are in the top of their head.

I’d rather fish than eat.
