VA Ave landing

Anyone ever put in at the landing on VA Ave. Just moved to park circle and found out about it. (Previously always used Remeleys)I heard you have to be careful at high tide, some boats don’t fit under the train trestle.

Randy. Almost use that ramp exclusively as I live in the circle as well. Been there 10 years now… It can be very tricky depending on the tide. I’ll be happy to let you ride with me the next time I put in so you can get the gist of it. Should be going out on Friday. At a higher than normal tide, I have about 3 inches above my windshield to the train trestle. Have to lower power pole and rods. Beam could be an issue as well. Not sure how wide your Chaparral is…

let me know and welcome to the 'hood.

Randy, I am your backyard neighbor Bobby, my skiff goes through pretty easy. I went with Chris a couple of weeks ago and we came in at high tide and missed the top of my windshield by inches. It really depends on how wide your boat is. It can get tricky with the out going tide because of the current but you just have to go slow. I hit the tresel the first time I took my new boat out and was pissed but got over it in 1 minute. Lol. No damage. But since then it has been fine. And yes you have to lower your rods. I guess I could have told you this in the back yard. Lol

Bobby… Are you on a street that starts with a W? If so, I’ve seen that CS. Good looking boat. The 3 of us need to grab a beer.

Sorry to high jack your thread RandyB, but I have a question for NorthChuckTiger and Charlestonskiff. I’ve launched from there once, during high tide and the water was up to the dock. I had no problem tying off to the dock for launching and recovering. I came another time during low tide and the water was well below the dock. The shore is pretty rocky, so I was wondering how y’all launch and recover during low tide.

It’s pretty tricky. I have a power pole, so, I all but “beach” the boat on the ramp, pp down and park. otherwise, anchor/tie up to one of the billion cinder blocks out there.

also, don’t even think about it on a negative low. you will not get out of that creek in anything but a kayak.

Ok thanks. My boat is an old beater anyways, so I’ll just tie off at the ramp.

NorthChuckTiger yes sir that is my boat and thank you. And we do need to grab a beer, that would be awesome! Plus go Tigers!!

Will F. I have never gone out during low tide without someone with me. So am not sure but I have seen people beach it like NorthChuck said.

Is that place still sketchy at night?

I wouldn’t worry much about the width of the beam, my boat is just under 8ft wide and I have plenty of room on each side. What I have noticed to be my biggest issue is about 1.5-2 hours before low on the outgoing tide the current RIPS through the bottle neck under the trestle. I often have to creep up to the trestle and throw the motor in reverse and pull the rear of the boat(port side) toward the big concrete piling to line the boat up for a direct shot under. You cant swing wide because there isn’t enough water, and once you’ve put it in reverse you have to commit to the maneuver. Learned this one the hard way LOL. Never had to do it with the StumpNocker, but my Key West has a little more girth. On the high side I have had to fill both live wells, pull the plug to let water in the hull and have 2 people push the poling platform under the bridge just to get back in! These guys already answered the load and unload aspects of the landing. Hope this helps!

Stump… Did I help you out one day under that tressel?

Y’all forgot to mention how to navigate the right turn after you go past the trestle. If my memory serves me correctly that turn is a little tricky because of where the channel runs.

For sure hug the right-hand side leaving out from the landing after going under the trestle.:stuck_out_tongue:

This is what it looks like as the water bottlenecks through…

Anyone know what the little yellow cable is that goes down the left hand side piling? It goes up to a piece of 2in PVC capped on both ends and down below the water line. Seismic sensor maybe?

I’m thinking seismic as well. It sure as shot ain’t a tide station. I’m thinking both underwater activity ( i.e. Another piling breaking loose ) or vagrants on top of the tressle. The former makes more sense. It’s new too, first time seeing it this week.

Hope your joking about the starboard side after the tracks…#128520;

I think you stay wide going around that corner. Forget what Sellsfish told me and it has been a couple years since I’ve been through there. Not sure I would try to run an I/O in and out of there.

Good catch!! I was turned around I guess. Definitely stay to the left or outside of that bend while heading out from under the trestle. I don’t know what I was thinking:frowning_face:

The last time I used that landing my BIL and I paddled ot to the river and anchored up under the bridge. Caught a few little trash fish but at least we got out.

Hey Bobby, had to sell my boat but fished the area with my kayak. need to meet at the fence one day and plan a trip, especially with the nicer weather coming

1990 Chaparral 1900SL 4.3 Yamaha Sterndrive…yes a sterndrive in the salt

Too bad one of our tugboat friends doesn’t veer off course and take out the train trestle at Va. Ave. And the next night he has to pick up a crew member at Bushy Park, and at full throttle he must make his way back into the Cooper. Temporary dredge complete.
