VA Beach help, please?

My family is renting a house in Sandbridge and there is a dock out back with a channel that leads out to a big open bay. Should I use the same techniques, baits, lures as here? What is best to fish for next week, Reds or trout? Gut bait, shrimp or jigs? Trying to get all the kids on some good fishing…any help would be greatly appreciated!

I know it’s not VA Beach, but I just got back from NC OBX last week and caught a lot of really nice Flounder and Trout. They loved a 1/4 ounce red jig head with a White Gulp 4" swimming mullet. That rig caught a lot of fish all week!

The locals around Nags Head told me that very few Red Drum have shown up so far. So I wouldn’t think you would have a lot of luck targeting Reds.

Also, caught a lot of Blues with the same Gulp rig and using Menhaden fished on the bottom with a Carolina Rig. Hope that helps!

i caught some nice flounder a few summers back from the bank, on the rocks at rudee inlet. where the rest of the bank soul brothers are. you’ll see it. use live bait whatever you can net right there. carolina rig just off the rocks. 1 of the flounders was 5+. plenty of bluefish there too.

there are super cheap headboats that go out of rudee inlet and bottom fish on the chesapeake bay tunnels. it was around $30 a head for 4 hours back then. we got a sackful of mixed harbor bottom dwellers - croaker, flounder

Thank you both!!

rgee95, Thanks for the hint! I used the 4" Gulp mullet, New Penny and Ghost shrimp and we tore up the flounder and trout! The water was clear enough most days so we were able to sight them. Very cool.

Tony,

Glad it worked! That seems like the ticket up in that area. I just wish I could have the same type of success here!

I found that the more stained the water, the less flounder showed up in the surf. Do you fish at Folly pier for them? If so, do they bite much in all that muddy water?

Tony,

I’m a boat fisherman and usually fish the upper Wando. I am fairly new to this area and starting fishing here in this area a couple of months ago. I feel like I am getting more confident every time I get on the water here. However, I’m just not as consistent as I would like to be.

When I used to live in Virginia, I would try to get to the OBX area 3 or 4 times a year and would always have good success catching fish there. Hopefully, with some more work I will be able to replicate that here.

jig heads with grub worms at rudee or croatan side of VB. Minnows work good too, both bring flounders up.
