Vacation fishing

I live and fish down south of charleston near Edisto. Im thinking of getting a vacation rental on lake moultrie next month.

How is the water and fishing this time of year? I would like to catch some descent catfish since I have not been fresh water fishing without a fly rod since I was a kid.

My boat is a 23 ft deep v center console, and it probably need 3 feet to safely ride. Is the water too low for that? Do you think it will be ok?

I would like to keep the boat at the rental house dock. Does anyone have a recommended rental home or any recommended areas that are better for fishing cats this time of year?

I was up there the last week in July on into August and the water was LOW. They were steady dropping it every day we were there. Not sure if it kept going down or if it has started to rise again. You will need to check that before you head that way. As far as your required depth, on Moultrie, you can go from 30ft to 1 ft deep in seconds, so you need to know the ares you will be in. WIth the lake so low, there are plenty of stumps you would normally pass over that will be laying in wait for your foot when you pass over now.

I fished a 6-man tournament there several years ago. My boater, who fished there a lot, hit one stump and got stuck on another on the last day of the tournament. Those cypress stumps are big and tough. Be very careful, or stay in the canal.

My buddy has a simple set-up on Bonneau for rent. I’ve kept my 20’ Pioneer there on his dock and you would have enough water for your boat as well. PM me if you are interested and I’ll give you his number. It’s nothing fancy, but has an awesome view and does the job just fine.

the lake marion water level hasn’t been this low since January 2013 so be careful
