Venice LA Epic Yellow Fin Trip

Made the long journey to Venice in pursuit of the illusive Yellow Fin. Weather was looking very iffy but had an open window on Wednesday. Loaded the boat with huge mullet and headed offshore. Got a call of sightings of yellow fin and headed towards the oil rigs. There were yellowfin skyrocketing all arounds us. The fight was on. these fish were super strong. We had three hooked up on the lines and it took all of us to bring the fish to the boat. I think we all touched the rod. It takes around an hour per fish to get them to the boat. we had 5 in the boat and needed one more fish to complete our day. Jeff was tossing a popper and bam fish on the spinning rod. He handed the rod to Carson and he finally brought it to the boat. We went 6 for 6 on the yellowfin. All fish were over a hundred pounds, The largest was 167 lbs.
Great crew Gregg, Ryan, Jeff, Ed, Carson and Marvin.

lots of sushi and tuna salad- congrats on a great day

I wanna go next time !! LOVE YF…

Maybe we do need some oil rigs off our coast. That’s some serious meat y’all took home. Thanks for sharing.

Great trip Gregg. I can’t wait to fish with MGFC in February.

Yeah, but do you consider a dog to be a filthy animal? I wouldn’t go so far as to call a dog filthy but they’re definitely dirty. But, a dog’s got personality. Personality goes a long way.

“I’m not a hundred percent in love with your tone right now…”

Double N, I always carry a deep freeze and generator. We vacuum pak our fish and freeze them each day. Pretty sure when you get home after 30hrs of driving and two days of fishing you very happy all the fish are preserved and work complete! We have come home and all 6 crew have had 100lbs of frozen Tuna steaks. We have been fishing with the MGF Co. for over 10 years and they are a first class group. We kept a boat there last year and we got to go 5 times and they always put us on the fish even if we weren’t chartering them that trip. You better go prepared cause you taint buying coolers in the middle of nowhere! We also picked up 100lbs of 14ct shrimp @ $4.00lb. Best trip this year and going back in Jan, Duck hunting in the morning and Tuna in the afternoon! You can go back through the archives and see post of many of the trips we have made. We had a great crew with Capt. Newman making his first trip and cant wait to go back!

If it got any better I couldn’t stand it.

Started using an inverter and deep cell battery on my freezer on our long trips. Beats the genny! Great fishing in the Gulf this time of the year, Great picts!

You guys schedule these trips a year in advance…? Most of these guys stay booked. There are some dudes down there making bank. I may start fishing out of Fouchon. Anyone here ever been there…?

This is a bucket list for me. I should do this before I get too old

If anyone ever needs an extra guy or wants to try and put a trip together, I am always game. I talked with Trey Pique from Voo Doo Charters down there and he said they have a few openings in February. He also said that the bigger models are usually around then too. Just sayin…

We tried it a couple years ago during the Month of July with no luck but after seeing BlackBart post around that same time and now the success MissEmily has had I’m pumped to get back at this ASAP. Would love to catch one of those BigBoys. Nice post and pictures
