Fishing in about 120’ a couple of weeks ago they were stacked from 10ft below the boat all the way to the bottom. It was like feeding a school of rabid yellowtails down in the keys. You could literally watch them swim around the boat looking for the next bait to go down. No sh*t they’re not being overfished…
It looks like they may remove the closed recreational season for bliners and then shut down the red porgy rec season. Interesting whack-a-mole approach to fishery mgmt.
Do not tell fish stories where the people know you; but particularly, don’t tell them where they know the fish.

I wonder how long it will take the SEDAR team to realize that our fishery isn’t anywhere close the same as South Florida, and should not be managed like South Florida? You would think that after 30 years, someone would eventually get it…
They refuse to listen to FACTS! The elimination of all headboats from Murrells inlet south has had a huge impact on B-liners. But do you think the SAFMC would notice…not a chance! They will come out and beat their drum about how well their closures have helped the fish…bla…bla…bla… But lets not forget…BSB’s are still overfished and undergoing overfishing!

That’s a pretty good analogy.
Never heard it put like that before.

I work in the healthcare field and the whack-a-mole approach to addressing problems is what has put this entire industry into the hole it is currently in. This, in turn, requires far-reaching, unstudied, knee-jerk legislation to attempt to remedy the situation.
Everything is part of a dynamic ebb and flow whether you are addressing business or fisheries. When you make a change to one small aspect there will always be a ripple effect throughout the environment of whatever you are working with.
Personally, it seems as though “the people in charge” are addressing each individual fishery as a Silo without taking into account the dynamic that has been mentioned so many times by people on here.
Close down seabass.
Fisherman move towards bliners.
Bliners are determined to be overfished.
Lets catch porgies and triggers.
Now the bliners and seabass are eating every mother-loving creature on the reefs causing other fish numbers to fall.
SHUT IT DOWN
I wouldn’t call it ignorance either. By pretending to fix one problem knowing that, in turn, it will cause 25 other problems, that’s what we in the industry call “Job Security”.
I realize most of this has been posted at one point or another, I just needed to vent and felt a friendly reminder of what’s going on out there couldn’t hurt.
Carry on.
Do not tell fish stories where the people know you; but particularly, don’t tell them where they know the fish.

I predict black sea bass will be the next recovered stock.
Keep in mind it’s very intentional. As I showed you on the other thread, their goal is to heads toward an “ecosystem based” management. This translates into “no fishing zones”. They would love to close off 80% of the bottom fishing grounds tomorrow. They tried it with Red Snapper as the catalyst, but failed. Essentially, their technique is to create this “whack-a-mole” and “bible of fishing regulations” to the point where fishermen beg for no fishing zones. It’s a case of the “false dilemma”… They would love nothing more than to say, “Even the fisherman are saying per species is the wrong way to manage. We are forced into ecosystem based management”… The truth is that it can work, but they don’t want it to…
All I have to say is that trolling season is coming up. With the warming water…there will be more boats out there. I think many people are past giving a (**()…Arrrrgh…
