My wife and I ate a Mt Pleasant restaurant Friday night and “fresh” vermillion was on the menu.Knowing that they weren’t supposedly legal until April 1,I asked if the fish was caught localy. The waiter said “yes,we bring it over from Shem Creek each day”.I then asked if he/they knew that vermillion were out of season and that it was a fed law.He talked to the chef and assured us that the VS was legal.Any thoughts? Sellsfish?

“The commercial harvest of vermilion snapper in the South Atlantic federal waters is closed, effective 12:01 a.m. (local time) February 29, 2012, until 12:01 a.m. (local time) July 1, 2012. NOAA Fisheries Service has determined the 2012 January through June commercial quota of 315,523 pounds of vermilion snapper will have been reached by this date.”
feb 29 was wednesday…
had a waiter offer me “fresh local cobia” last weekend - i know it has been a warm winter, but i didnt think it was very likely to see one this time of year, let alone catch enough to have as a special at a restaurant? I always get skeptical about this stuff.
If I want a fresh fish, and cant catch one (usually the case) I call paul!
might be coming from the Gulf or a freezer. Definitely not fresh from shem creek
Had one pull that crap on me a couple weeks ago. I called him on it and suprisingly he went back and did a some research before he came back “mistaken”. Turned out he’d have been on the hook for the meal if I refused to pay for his lie.

Yeah, but do you consider a dog to be a filthy animal? I wouldn’t go so far as to call a dog filthy but they’re definitely dirty. But, a dog’s got personality. Personality goes a long way.

What am I missing here…If it was caught Wednesday, and served Friday is that not fresh?
good point, i guess I was assuming the daily thing meant that they meant they caught it that day?
The daily thing means they get fish daily from a wholesaler… B-liners were still open to commercial boats until Wednesday. I got a load in on Thursday. There have been a few cobia brought in by local commercial boats in the past few weeks, I had one on the counter at the store. Cobia are also being farmed in Panama, but the meat taste like mud, and I will not stock it. Any restaurant that says they are getting it “boat direct” is probably buying from Mark Marhefka as he is the only one that sells locally right to restaurants. Ask them if it came from Mark. Since there is no truth in menu law in SC, they can pretty much tell you anything they want as there is nothing you can do about it. I have been pushing for that to become law for many years. Only the high end places seem to want to enact it as law, as the fry houses have the most to lose with the lies about the local by way of Indonesia mahi in the plate. Florida and north Carolina will prosecute you for defrauding the patron by substitution. Both states have a DNA database to work with.

DN…Swai, Basa, Pangasius (Panga) Catfish. Is a scourge on the American commercial fisherman. This CRAP is sold as Grouper, Snapper, Sole, flounder, US Catfish, and many other names. It is a very cheap import from Vietnam and China and they have flooded the market with this swill! If you see this garbage on a menu, avoid this place as they will serve anything. Here is a link to a story about this wonderful fish…Mekong river in Vietnam is about the filthiest water on the planet.

Sells,
Is there any farmed raised seafood that you sell or would consider sellng? I wonder what makes that cobia taste bad the diet??
I sell farm raised Salmon from Scotland, Farmed rainbow trout from NC, Tilapia from Costa Rica. Everything else is wild caught with most being domestic. I don’t know why the cobia tats bad, may be water temp? It seems cold water farmed fish taste better.
Oh and my grouper (coming out of Apalachicola) is both red and black and retails for $7.99 whole fish and $16.99 fillet

Thx alot for info Sells and others.I was also in Sam’s Thursday and saw juvenile red snapper ~13-16" for sale as “Rock Fish”.They were whole/gutted and no doubt red snapper as they had the bruise a bit high on the side and towards back of dorsal like the ones I catch near shore in fall.Maybe from Gulf?
