if the jig you are using does not have a barrel swivel do you put one at the leader/solid ring connection or at the main line/leader connection?
and how much leader do you use?
my concern is with some of the jigs having funky concave/convex designs now that they will cause undue twist on the way to the bottom…
this guy has written one of the most detailed jigging posts I have ever seen http://www.sportfishermen.com/board/f172/gmans-intro-vertical-jigging-67557.html but I’m curious how people fish and rig around here…
I am not concerned with knot breakage when the fish is that high in the water column. I am more concerned with lack of steady tension and the fish getting slack or changed leverage in order to throw/pull the hook.
20ft of topshot/leader is for shock absorption. You will break more tackle off with shorter topshot. You lose sensitivity, however, by going with longer leader.
There are tradeoffs, and it gets too technical to suggest a one size fits all. It normally is not going to matter honestly…
If you have that much jig or lure twist on the way down, then a swivel isn’t going to help you anyway. You need to rig differently if you have that kind of twist. Twist should not be going on unless you have a fish spiraling on the way up or a bait/lure is helicoptering on the way down (i.e. rigged wrong).
I guess if a lure is designed to purposefully spiral like that, then you’re going to have to rig the lure per that company’s recommendation.
Don’t overthink it.
Less is more, keep it simple, the fish don’t know the difference- only you do, and so on and so forth.
I use a little spro 130# barrel swivel connected to the braid with a bimini twist and catspaw
As for leader I only run about 5 ft of 60 to 100 # flourocarbon depending on jig size and species
I use crimes for the leader connections whenever possible
I personally feel with the rapid movement and the fact that a fish is reacting I don’t think the swivel gets noticed at all
This method has worked with all the usual suspects as well as both blacking and yellowfin tuna
70 lb Saltiga color coded braid, spider hitch, albright knot and 10’ of 80 lb mono leader. I do crimp a large loop on the split ring for added action. This has been a great way to secure some groupers. Yellow and pink OTI Jumbo jigs and Bass pro 7 ounce in pink , sardine and glow. Don’t waste your money on Butterfly jigs.

That’s kind of what I and my friends do. I do use the cheaper butterflies…ie only painted on one side. They do seem to hold up longer vs the cheaper ones that will bend and cause a different drop.

65 lb braid, Red Phillips knot to about 12 feet of 80 lb leader to loop knot on jig. Have never had any issues with twist or thought I needed a swivel, but I’m sure it can’t hurt. I just keep it as simple as I can, if I get cut off on a tower leg or something I can have it rerigged in about a minute.

Have heard of that knot… Think I will try it. Another one I want to practice up on is the sebile.

It is by far the fastest, strongest, braid to large mono knot I have used. It is a very compact knot as well. I like it because even if the boat is rocking like crazy, I can just about tie it with my eyes closed.
No swivel for me either. I use a 80-120 braid to a bimini twist and conect a 20ft or so piece of shock leader connected via a Bristol or an Albright depending on how heavy the leader I’m connecting is. Never had a problem with line twist…
I like the knockoff butterfly jigs and the Williamson jigs. I also agree with Phin, I use the Roscoes when the current is ripping. Those jigs sink fast!
