vhf antenna mount

I was wondering where is the best place to mount a vhf antenna on my boat. I don’t have a t-top and I want to make sure that its always out of the way while fishing. Normally I fish inshore, but occasionally I plan on going to some of the nearshore reefs or even the 60. I have a bimini top and hardly ever even put it on the boat, but on occasion like a really hot day I’ll put it on. My original idea was to put it on the hand rail around the top of the console, but I have seen them mounted on the gunwhale before too. Anybody have any input on which way would be best?

I would put it on the hand rail. They are always in the way on the gunwale, it’s usually hard to run the cable and you lose some height. The higher, the better for good range.

It’s also a good idea to mount it at least 3 feet from your GPS antenna.

Thanks guys, that’s what I figured, but I’m thinking about using a 4’ antenna. Digital antenna has one thats 4.5 db gain thats pretty nice and not pretty expensive l. I think since I’m not going offshore very far if at all, I probably don’t need that 8’ antenna. Any input here?

4’ is plenty for inshore or near shore use.
