4 boats of my closest friends were out with the kids at our local lake doing the usual thing of pulling kids on tubes etc.
My buddy has a VHF on a boat that is new to him and everytime he hailed us on the radio all I got was ■■■■■■■■ whether we were close or far away. I had him adjust his squelch and the humming noise stopped but we could still not here him. I finally handed him my hanheld vhf so he could communicate with us.
I am assuming he has a bad mic on his radio and needs to replace it. Do any of you have any other suggestions of why he had a humming ■■■■■■■■ when ever he tried to transmit??
Could be the connector for the antenna.
If you have a multi-meter, check for continuity between the center pin and the outer ring.
If you have continuity, that’s bad.
Good news is, if that’s the problem, you can get another connector from West Marine pretty cheap.

Thank you all for the suggestions of where to look for the problem. One thing I forgot to put in the original post is that he can hear me very clearly.
I feel like there may be a poor connection from the antenna cable and will check that first, but if he has a bad connection would he not have trouble receiving also??
chris is right… I can recieve in my yard, but trying to transmitting was worthless. I was glad to hear “I read you loud and clear” when I did my first radio check at the landing on Saturday morning…
