VHF radio not recieving

Have replaced radio and antenna, still not receiving. Any ideas?

Did you replace with a new radio and antenna? If so, did you also replace the coax? Are you using the internal speaker or do you have an external speaker? Is your battery charged?

Don’t mean to be playing twenty questions, but it will take a little more information to diagnose the problem.

Just found out radio is a few years old, but never out of the box. Guess i’ll try another radio next, unless you have any other ideas. new coax, battery charged, internal speaker, have soldered connection over 5 times, have tried the connector with the spike and crimps.
I do hear a “click” when it’s trying to receive.
Thank you

i made this up but i think it’s true

Can you recieve on the weather channels? I would ask a friend if you can hook up your radio to thier antenna. Then you can rule that out without spending any more money.

Can you adjust the squelch to make the radio turn to static?
You said you hear a click when it tries to receive. I’m betting the internal speaker is your problem.
If it has a port for a external speaker, try to plug another speaker to the external port and see if you can get any sound.

sounds like the antenna has a ground issue.

Had same problem took radio out an sent to shop, they found the speaker not working at all. $95.00 fixed the problem.

$12.00 speaker an $83.00 in labor. Bet If I new more about them could have done it for less than $10.00 bucks.

Good Luck

You made this up? Is it a real problem on a real boat?

OK, you replaced the radio and antenna but it’s still not receiving? How do you know? Are you sure someone is transmitting on another radio of the frequency your’s is set on and in range? Can you tune in one or more weather stations? Is there static or no sound at all? Does anything light up? Have you read the instructions to know how to set or disable the squelch?

Did you replace the radio and antenna with new ones or used ones that may or may not work?

Just throwing parts (like a radio and antenna) at a problem is a very expensive way to troubleshoot problems. Your best bet may be to have a radio repair person find and fix your problem before you waste any more time or money.

BTW: It’s unlikely that both the radio and the antenna failed at the same time. One or the other is causing your problem.

Try calling Tow Boat next time you are testing, I usually don’t get a reply calling at random from Toogoodoo but I always get a reply on a test if I’m going out of the creek and its always nice to know they are listening if I need them. I know there is some type of automated check but don’t really know how to tell you to do it.

Has the coax been replaced?
