vhf radio question

I noticed that the cord my mic is attached to is cracked in a few places and no longer transmits clearly. Would I be able to by a new mic and cord and attach it to the radio or do I need to purchase a new radio. I have looked at where the cord attaches to the radio and it would seem logical that it would unclip so replacement would be simple. I have not tried too hard to get the old cord unattached but it does not simply look like it comes out.

Thanks for the help

Buy a new mic./w cord, and replace. just how long you been a capt’in? Just reread your post, and it seems that you may have a VHF radio, that’s self contained, meaning you can’t replace the mic., and cord. Sorry, but you may need to replace the VHF, with a new one, there are several brands that are very reasonable, check around Capt’in! Seeya, Scott

What model/brand vhf is it? I just checked ICOM’s site, and the do sell replacement mic’s for the new units. I would think if it’s more then a few years old the manufacture may no longer carry the parts, but you could probably get a used unit off of ebay and replace parts as needed. Good luck!

A “cracked” cord and “no longer transmits clearly” are two different things.

Marine VHF radios start at about $100.00 so they are usually not worth paying to repair them unless they are the “full featured” models. You might want to check with the manufacturer on a repair cost ot just buy a replacement and have the latest technology.

Capt Tom,
Check the back of the unit.
You may have a plug that will allow for a remote mic.
If you do, you get add one to that.
It would help to know the make and model.

Happy boatin’ y’all!!

A new radio is not really all that much. I’d just get a new one if it were me, Tom. You can get a decent ICOM for like $125.

Mixed Nutz, cut Tom some slack, man. He’s is a fine captain and a very nice guy–one of the nicest I’ve met, actually. He moved here and figured our waters on his own and can hang with the guys who’ve been fishing here their whole lives.

See Nutz, I’m not the only one. Seeya, Dave!

My apologies to Captain Tom, think I’ll just change my alias to “Whoopin’ Boy”! Will that work for ya’ Dave? Seeya, Scott

Mixed Nutz,

No harm done!! I can take it with the best of them. I will be the first to admit I am not the most knowledgeable when it come to fishing in the ocean, most of my charters are ran inshore. I do know that I am not chancing going out in the ocean without a perfectly working VHF so that is where the question came from!!!

Also, thanks for the kind words LEE!!!
