Right now I’m looking to get a new tying vice, as my old one is very basic and has some trouble holding hooks tightly. What suggestions do y’all have as far as brands, models, and styles are concerned. I tie everything from small trout patterns to fairly large saltwater streamers. Price isn’t a huge concern but I don’t want to break the bank on this.
Since they aren’t exactly beating down the door…
I recently bought a Peak rotary. It’s a budget vise @ $150 but it more than suits my needs. It handles hooks up to 1/0 nicely and, I don’t tie anything under a sz 2 but have heard from my coldwater tying friends that this vise works well for them too. Keep in mind that all decent quality vises do exactly the same thing: hold a hook securely. Most of what you pay for are bells and whistles which are purely a matter of taste.
Fishguy. The PEAK Vise has many bells and whistles but they aren’t included in the actual base package. If you want to throw a hook in one give me a shout I will let ya test it out. Also I have tied some larger 5/0 and 6/0 patterns in my vise. By far the best vise you can purchase for $149

I bought a renzetti traveler. It wasn’t too expensive like some of the renzetti presentation or master models they make and I have been very happy with it. Good thing about buying a nice vice, you can resale one day if you want somethign else. Seems like I bought mine for 189 a few years ago.
Do any of these “what product should I buy” threads ever end with the OP responding with, “Here is what I decided to buy based on what I learned on CFDotCom.?”

By the way (if it matters), I enjoy tying on Dyna-King and… I don’t sell ANY fishing products.

just for those who don’t know me… this post drips with sarcasm, am totally joking about the EP vise… I have a Peak vise that kicks ass and didn’t break the bank. I was going to pull the trigger on the traveler but I am VERY happy with the decision to go with the peak. I have tied flies with a pair of vise grips and got the job done, but a nice vise does make a difference.
