Video - Boat sinking - the done rights and wrongs.

Came across this on HT, it’s a bit long but fascinating and a good teaching video of what was done right and what was done wrong.

What did they do right?

What did they do wrong?

Long video, but definitely shows you how fast things can happen and how unprepared they were.

they were definitely lucky they were within cell phone range.

a couple obvious things i noticed that were a no-no…

1)No VHF

2)No way of giving GPS coordinates

3)No ditch bag

4)somewhat unfamiliar on what/where safety items were

5)the captain should have been more concerned about stopping that first leak the mate noticed(even though that wasnt the only spot leaking)

6)no wooden plugs or any other method of stopping up possible hull leaks

7)they should have stopped when they first felt the velvet drive go bad.

Some things they did right

  1. they stayed relatively calm and collected

  2. they did have some flares

If I’m posting, its because I’m sitting here at work, dreaming about fishing.

I watched the video with my son and we talked about what they did right and what they did wrong. The stuff needs to be played in your head over and over again so that it’s almost like muscle memory…

Get the life jackets
Call for help and give them your location,
Grab the ditch bag,
Find where the water is coming in and try to stop it, bail the water out of the boat,
Tie floatables together with available ropes…

Everyone needs to have a job and know their job. Someone posted this stuff on TH:

Stay Afloat goop:

I think I’ll get a hand pump too.

If the video, Jafro saw there was a leaking hose and it took the captain a good 5 minutes or more to finally look for it and attempt to do something about it. (**()it man…plug that hole!

I’ve never heard of that stay afloat goop. Looks like a good product to have on a boat.

Great thread!

I’ve been on too many top shelf boats that the captain/owner never gave one thought to it being able to sink…

I’ve always made it a point to know what safety gear is onboard before leaving the hill. Not just… “you got enough life jackets?” … “oh yea, I got us all covered.” Have the captain point out specifically where they are to everyone on board .

“Why Bruce?”
