Virginia Avenue boat landing

When I met with Mr. Anderson, special assistant to North Charleston mayor Summey, around two months ago he didn’t see a problem with removing the old railroad trestle in Filbin creek that limit’s access to the Cooper river at all tidal stages. Furthermore, I contacted someone in the Coast Guard and reported the trestle to be a navigation hazard.
Have you seen any change in Filbin creek? You might as well urinate into the wind.
I remind you we need action on this?

Waste of time talking to Ray Anderson. Boeing put up a berm behind our house and then came back and cut it down to 5 1/2 feet high. They originally had it at twelve feet as promised to the neighborhood. They only lowered it behind the first 8 houses and said it was for the benefit of the oak trees. Mr Wilson told me he had talked to Ray Anderson and showed him the plans and they both agreed on it. Ray told me he had talked to Mr Wilson and told him it had to be put back to twelve feet. Now mind you I talked to Mr Wilson after talking to Ray. Mr Anderson will not return calls or respond to emails.

I actually was there today to check on the clearance of the train bridge at low tide. Don’t know why anyone would have a problem removing it other than the cost. I guess the biggest roadblock is someone would actually need to make the decision which seems to be an issue these days. If it is removed the landing will be swamped with boats like all the other landings…that’s the only downside if you have a small boat that can fit under the bridge!

I’m going to try putting in there next week with my 17’ center console. Curious if I’m going to have issues at high tide.

You will most likely not get under the Trestle at high tide, and definitely not on a flood tide. I see 19 and 21 foot carolina skiff crab boats use the landing regularly.

I agree the trestle needs to be removed. However, that’s not the only issue with that landing. Many rocks hidden at mid to high tide at the ramp, no dock and narrow creek. I’m not really sure how you would safely launch there on a solo boating adventure. Not much parking either…

Don’t get me wrong, we need a usable landing at all tides in the Virginia Ave/Navy Yard area but I’m just not sure R.M Hendrix Park is the answer.

Corkman - Thank you for your effort and info on this landing and the Bushy landing.

Launching solo is doable, you just have to be creative. Park on the left bank at low tide and scoot across the rocks back to the ramp without busting your butt. Park at the dock and climb over the rail at high tide. If people are using the dock you get some nasty looks. One way or the other, that trestle is coming down soon. Whether it’s by someone’s hands or on its own. It’s on its last legs and only a matter of time before it falls in. I just hope I’m not under it when that happens.

Your right bellyup that trestle is about to fall on its own. I launch solo and just pull the boat up on the ramp and tie it off to one of the rocks.
