Visiting in May

Hello all! As my name implies, I will be a tourist to your fair city. My wife has commitments and I get to come along with her, and will be bringing my fishing gear. We will be there the middle of May.

Let me give some background. I don’t have much saltwater experience, though I did a lot of research before we went to Cancun and caught a few fish shore fishing the lagoon. I have a couple medium size spinning rods and reels, what I would consider fairly heavy here in Colorado, but what was called light spinning on the inshore charter we got in Cancun. Was exactly the same rod I had. I don?t have any big surf rods and won’t be able to get any before the trip. They have 40# braid and can put on whatever leader I need. I also have a couple ultralights I might bring, it is great fun to catch 2 pound or smaller fish on the ultralight.

For tackle I have Zara Spooks, some 1 and 2 oz bucktail jigs, jerk and stickbaits, 6" to 8"swimbaits, 1 and 2 oz jigheads and double tail scampi style plastics, a popping cork and some plastic shrimp, lots of different spoons, and some different gulps. I will also of course be bringing hooks and sinkers, probably nothing heavier than 3oz since I don’t really intend to do any surf fishing (don’t think I cast my gear out far enough).

We will be staying Courtyard Charleston Waterfront, which is on the Ashley. There is a small dock right outside the hotel I am hoping I can fish from. Since I won’t have a lot of time I plan on fishing some places close to the hotel. Spending some time searching the forum I have come up with a couple options: Brittlebank Park and the Battery. I honestly don’t care what I catch, since it will all be catch and release. While game fish of course would be fun, a day catching flounder, rays, small sharks, and “trash” fish would be just as good, and honestly better than a day of not catching game fish.
I am planning of picking up some bait like shrimp, squid, and fish, and rigging a drop shot or Carolina rig. I also plan on using the poppin

Try also posting this on the inshore discussion side. May get more responses. I only do the offshore thing so can comment on the inshore thing. Hope this helps a little.

Thanks to you who have sent me messages, it is much appreciated!

I have put together quite a bit of information and hopefully will get into some fish. We had an unexpected expense come up, so we won’t be able to do a charter, it will all be shore and pier fishing. I’m looking forward to it though, this is the fishing I’ve been doing all winter

And the wife

She’s looking forward to warm and beach as well!

Nice fish there.

Mt pleasant pier might be your best bet and is close. I would concentrate of natural bait for land and pier fishing and there are several tackle shops close that can get you up to speed for hooks and stuff you might not have in co.

Pm me and I may be able to get you on the water if I am in town then.

Thanks Cobia!

Mt Pleasant Pier is one that was suggested, so I did a lot of searching in the forum and came up with this.

Mount Pleasant Pier
Under the Arthur Ravenel Jr Bridge

Sheephead
~Fish incoming tide to high tide on the back/left side corner of the pier, do not fish the end. Find small barnacle clusters. Fish the right up against the calm water side of the piling. Scrape barnacles for chum when tide is low.
~Carolina rig - 12 to 18 inch leader, 1/0 circle hook, with 1/4 to 1oz or 2oz weight. Drop straight down the piling to the bottom, work your way up.
~Use fiddler crabs, mussels, or clams
~Small hit, set the hook. They suck in the crab and bite, and then spit out the shell.

Flounder and Reds
~Fresh shrimp along the grassline

“~Small hit, set the hook. They suck in the crab and bite, and then spit out the shell.”

Correct, only sometimes you have to set the hook before they bite, or its too late:wink:
