Can someone enlighten me on the following;
“What is the SAFM council’s rational for this move? What exactly are they saying the reason and justification is for the VMS?” What exactly have they gone on record stating the reason is?"

They are saying better fisheries management which equates to MORE closed areas. Satellite tracking on commercial level boats will easily identify all the spots they need to close. We will get left with the sand bottom areas far far away from any ledge or break.

Thats what I took from that last night as well. They will see where the majority of the fish are caught to create more MPA’s. Before you know it the entire ledge will be off limits to everyone including us recreational fisherman. I am definately planning on being in Charleston on the 23rd at the public hearing and encourage everyone else that has an interest in offshore fishing to be there as well. Does anyone know where this hearing will be held?

Here’s the link to when and where the pubic comments and hearing will be held. There’s also a link where you can submit written comments. I am also posting my written comments but after listening to last nights Q&A I believe I will be submitting some additional comments!

Unless something unforseen happens, I will drive from Saluda to Charleston to make this meeting.
The madness has to stop.

We all know that their plan/answer that is “under consideration” for having SG on board with pelagics will be, do not troll in the MPAs, better yet (for them) no fishing at all in the MPAs. Their original and goal for MPAs included pretty much the entire ledge from Florida to Big Rock off Morehead. This cannot happen.

I think what most people don’t realize too is that this will end up affecting ANYBODY fishing. If your boat can go offshore, guess what you will need a VMS. This will include kayaks, jon boats, PWC as well. How else will they be able to monitor all fishing?
