VMS Webinar Tonight 4/4/13

VMS Q&A Webinar tonight at 6pm with SAFMC staff. Regster here;

http://www.safmc.net/Meetings/PublicHearingsandScopingMeetings/tabid/737/Default.aspx#Public_Hearing_Materials

Logged in and watching, anyway to tell how many others are logged in?

Eventually it will come to the recreational fisherman especially since they mentioned that more MPAs WILL be created!

If your listening a NOAA enforcement officer made a comment to someones question about how it would be enforced if a vessel was Dolphin and Wahoo fishing in the MPA and then landed SG species even if they were caught outside of the MPA, say on your way home.

He said they would be in violation period!

Even if they stop somewhere on the way home outside of the MPA area. With more MPAs proposed for the future this will end up being a major issue for everyone and more expanded VMS incorporation.

The way it was laid out - it sounds like a done deal and the council is just dotting the I’s and crossing the T’s. I had always hoped that my kids & grands would be able to fish - but its all being taken away.

I assure you they have no idea what’s coming if they think something’s a done deal.

Mr. Cupka, are you reading this?

i logged out after i heard that…as a small business owner i feel really bad for you commercial guys,this is so out of control…

Sorry I thought all of Wayne Mershon’s VMS comment letter had posted the first time.

Im going to be in a real pickle. I don’t commercial fish hardly anymore but I will be required to buy this device and according to the NOAA agent will have to disclose my target species before leaving the dock so that I won’t be able to target anything other than that if I fish near or in an MPA.

This will cause a lot of problems since trolling is not always good and sometimes you have to target other species in order to save a trip.

Capt Markbrown,
Where did you find this note from Wayne Mershon? I would like to forward it on to my congressman and give hime this additional information. You can pm me or email me with it.

Thanks

Can someone enlighten me on the following;
“What is the SAFM council’s rational for this move? What exactly are they saying the reason and justification is for the VMS?” What exactly have they gone on record stating the reason is?"

It’s coming to recreationals if it comes to the commercial boats.

Same gear, same fishery.

We have to stand up to the bully right now, or nobody will be left on the playground.

Stay tuned.

“Better data and easier enforcement of (more) closed areas.”

Phin is correct. It is coming to ALL fishermen. Go to the SAFMC website and it is spelled out in their Research and Monitoring Plan to be implemented by 2015. IT DOES INCLUDE RECREATIONAL FISHING, DIVING, SHRIMPING - EVERYONE!

Type 1 MPAs (no trolling or bottom fishing) are a favorite among a lot of the law enforcement and science community because its easier to manage and closes any gaps or loop holes.

The only gap or loop hole if this passes will be the private recreational community. Now with more MPAs coming and that is a fact. What do you think the next move will be after this goes into effect for the commercial guys.

The noose gets tighter!

They are saying better fisheries management which equates to MORE closed areas. Satellite tracking on commercial level boats will easily identify all the spots they need to close. We will get left with the sand bottom areas far far away from any ledge or break.

It’s definately coming to Recs.
Before I finally left, he had said 3 times…Rec was considered but the system couldn’t handle the load at this time.
I promise you, one day they will up grade their system and we Rec guys will have to have VMS. Now is the time to make your voices heard loud and clear. The plan seems to be to get the enforcement tool in place before the total shut-down.
