VRO over oiling??

I have a '95 2-stroke 90 HP Johnson Oceanrunner that runs like a top, after it gets warmed up. The problem I am having is that it is getting to be a beast to crank. The carbs have been rebuilt this summer. When I finally do get it cranked it, I have to put it into high neutral and “blow” out the oil. It smokes like a beast to a point that I usually cloud out the landing for a little while. But like I stated before once it warms up and burns all the excess oil it runs great and quits smoking.

I am assuming that the VRO system is somehow seeping excess oil into the fuel lines and carbs while the motor sits between trips, and I am trying to crank the motor on a very rich oil mix.

Any other ideas or possibilities?

Boat motors…

If car or airplane manufacturers put motors built like boat motors in their vehicles, they’ll all be beaten to within an inch of their lives. Yet boat owners accept crappy motors as part of ownership of a boat.

Stupid boat motors.

/I dunno, mine is in the shop for being almost impossible to start too.

Seen the same thing w/ Johnsons, not sure why…

Seems worse the longer it sits up, harder to start and more smoke. Could be more that the fuel has evaporated out of the carb and lines, but the oil will not evaporate.

salt hunter is pretty close
with the motor tilted up durring storage, the fuel in the carbs leaks out
there is pressure still on the oil line, and the oil seeps into the carb bowl, making it very difficult to start.
replace your primer bulb, and store motor trimmed down.
when starting, hold choke in, and the motor will run off the “choke”, and burn out the excess oil.

Chris V, would that be the primer bulb on the VRO system by the Oil Res or the Fuel bulb.

Salt - that was part of my thinking too with all the heat lately the gas evaporating off leavin the oil.

If I may…I believe Chris was indicating the oil primer bulb was allowing it to ‘seep’.

Chris, is there an easy way to release the oil line pressure after a day on the water to try an head off that issue?? Can the oil reservoir cap just be loosened a bit? or something else…

I was refering to the fuel primer bulb
alot of times, it will allow the fuel to drain back into the tank.
no easy way to unhook oil system
opening the oil tank wont help
pressure is from the primer bulb

MS RR, did not intend to hi-jack your thread…But am just as interested in learing.

Chris, thanks for answering, and we ALL appreciate your input!

Not sure if this would make any diff potentially, but would an in-line cutoff valve on the oil supply help too???
