All ya’ll Yamaha experts.
I recently did a major tune up on my F150 (oil, grease, spark plugs, etc.). I removed the VST tank and cleaned the inside and replaced all the filters. There was a small amount of “apple jelly” in the bottom of the VST tank. I also noticed what looks like a drain on the bottom of the VST tank. My question is-- should I drain this tank on a routine basis? I didn’t find anything in the owner’s manual. Thanks in advance for any information ya’ll may have.
Thanks for the information.
I don’t think we are talking about the same tank. I have a four stroke that has an engine mounted small tank that acts as a float bowl before the injectors. It is called a VST or Vapor Separation Tank. No oil in it just gas (and in my case a little apple jelly).

It’s far better to keep fresh fuel moving through the VST then to drain it. If you absolutely have to leave the boat sitting for a long time, drain the VST and connect a remote tank and primer bulb filled with a gallon of non-ethenol gas + 1 oz sta -bil and 1 oz yamaha ringfree. Prime the system with the storage gas and then cycle the key switch a few times (to kick on the fuel pump)until fuel starts coming out of the drain again. close the drain and cycle the key a couple more times. PRESTO! You have a pickled VST.
I started doing this when yamaha 4 strokes first came out and it works like a dream. You won’t find that in any manual.
Maybe I should patent that? I’ll call it Andy’s Yamapickle. Hope this helps.
Thanks Andy
I don’t let it sit for very long at a time. Maybe a few weeks at the most but I like your “pickle procedure”. I have a three gallon plastic tank I can rig up for the storage fuel. BTW, I have just about eliminated alcohol fuel from the boat’s diet. I think that will help as well.
Thanks again!
