Why would my tach not work sometimes? I know my rectifier is working. I have no problems charging batteries at all. I can watch my volt meter pick up especially on long runs. Seems like my tach doesn’t work when I first start the motor but after running for a little while it seems to work fine. Stops at around 5k rpms. Changed props from a 17 pitched stainless to a 15 1/2 pitch aluminum and the rpms are still at 5k. I don’t believe this to be correct. Motor seems to be running fine and it’s not hoggin’ down at all. I’m pushing my 21’ Wellcraft with only a Johnson 60 dgree V6 150hp. Motor sounds like it tachs out and runs like a top. No problems at all. ???
had a similar tach issue - replacement of tach worked for me. Only possible “repair” that I found was to remove the tach and “play with” the toggle switch on the back. Be sure to return toggle to original position and reinstall. If this doesn’t fix it, replace it.
verify battery voltage with motor off using a digital volt meter
start motor and rev to 1800rpm± check voltage again and it should be at least 1/2 volt higher.
if so, replace tach
if not, replace rectifier regulator
I just repowered last year and have 2 Faria tachs for Ocean Pro 150s that worked great before removal. If you go the new tach route PM me and I’m sure we could swap out some nominal stuff in trade.
