left Murrells Inlet around 5:45. It was a late start since we had to respool the downrigger, and get our last minute gear together. Havent been to the stream since last fall and it took a while to make sure we had everything.
Pretty nice ride out. stopped about 5 miles before the scarp. Water temp was 71.5 and we were in 125 feet of water. With in 5 minutes of lines in the water, we get a hit on the outrigger, than the bonita plug gets crushed. I see a huge wahoo come completely out the water with both lures in his mouth. He took a decent amount of line, but we got him to the boat, stuck him with a nice gaff shot, and hoisted him to the box.
the hook broke completely off the gaff just as we got him onboard. Got really lucky, as the wahoo’s mouth just missed my leg as it fell off the broken gaff
Finished the day with 4 nice wahoo, the biggest in the 60# range. All bites came before 10 am. No blackfin, did get one small bonita on the daisy chain though.
trolled until 2, then headed in. Really nice ride, except for the last 15 miles. Got a little wet. Great way to start out 2012.
