a guy that recently joined my dive club at the fl/ga border has a boat and we are doing rod and reel fishing tomorrow and several times in the future. this will be my 1st time fishing with him, but he says he has plenty of both bottom and trolling gear and has caught dolphin and blackfin, but hasnt crossed off wahoo from the list yet. i understand the concept of offshore trolling, but have only ever gone on a trip with knot@work out of charleston and the trip offered in diego garcia, indian ocean. the trip with knot@work yielded some dolphin and the only wahoo i ever caught was in diego garcia on what looked like a giant lipless crank that weighed probably close to a pound trolling at about 8 knots. i guess my main questions are what lures/baits work best, how beefy of wire leader is required, and where to look for them. im guessing look for weed lines and bait schools to get started? as always i do not want anybody’s spots (im at the fl/ga border anyways) and appreciate any pointers.
Zigzag the ledge. Troll faster than normal. People will use diving plugs or downriggers to get more of the water column covered. Full moons tend to get a better bite. Wire and high dollar lures aren’t always needed. I’ve caught plenty on seawitches on mono.

Most of mine have come this way at the ledge.

I’ve caught more wahoo with ballyhoo rigged behind Islanders on fluorocarbon using the tactics 23Sailfish described than with any specialty $$ lure with wire or cable leaders. Best wahoo day I ever had was in February on a full moon.
