Wahoo on Jig

Left the dock Saturday night at 11:00 p.m. with Captain Ted, Christian and Doctor Tom. Anchored up at the Grand Banks and picked up a few bottom dwellers. Headed to the South Ledge and started dragging baits at 6:30 in the morning. So many boats out there in was like 278 at 5 o’clock! Started out great, two blackfins off the bat. Looks like it’s gonna be a great day. Then cudas and bonita quadruple headers left and right non stop. Did manage a small wahoo later but decided to head to some numbers and do some bottom fishing and jigging. I had a 220 gram hammer diamond jig on the bottom when the line went completely horizonal in less than 2 seconds then pealed off 350 yrds of 80 pound braid. 30 minutes later we pulled in a very nice Wahoo!

nice fish. that trigger looks like a good one to boot.

That’s a nice suprise on a jig. Nice! He’s a long skinnee one, so it makes the weight estimate tough, but I would put him at 28#. Did you weigh him up?

There was an article on the prey found in wahoo in a offshore magazine recently. They found a few bottom fish in its stomach, suggesting they feed on the bottom some times. I'd rather hook a big hoo' instead of 40 b-liners.

Thought they only hit trolled baits. Thanks for sharin. Nice fish.

Wait one second there Mr Pole!!!

I have supplied evidence that you have violated Section 12, paragraph C, line 12 of the PEW Foundation code of ethical treatment of Wahoo. I quote " all wahoo that are foul hooked, must be released with a band-aid over said hook injury". It is obvious to me that this fish was minding his/her business, when you violated its rights by hooking it in the side! I will be notifying the SAFMC of this horrific act against nature. Here is a close up of the injury…HOW CAN YOU SLEEP AT NIGHT?

Sells- I guess EF called you too. Tell him about the long hook type thing that you bring fish in the boat with, a “gaff” I believe it’s called. Now you could bust his balls about a poor gaff shot, but that’s all.

skinnee, did'nt get a chance to weigh him,and it was hard to guess the weight because although he was long, did'nt have much girth.

Foul hooked hoo’s and kings make for excellent fights.

Nice catch.

I can’t believe he is able to pull your strings all the way from N.C… Weak, boys, weak!

What? You think it’s possible that somebody let a fish off the gaff in the cockpit without taking the jig out its mouth first?

I think it’s possible for the kevlar to part just as the gaff is sunk, leaving a hook in the mouth and the jig still on the leader. No?

Gaff goes in fish.
Fish comes over gunnell.
Fish comes off gaff.
Jig slings wildly as fish goes crazy in the cockpit.
Explitives are shouted.
Kevlar is cut.
Jig comes free.
Jig sinks into fish as guy yanks the rod to get the jig clear of the fish but the stinger hook can’t get clear.
Pics taken with jig still in fish.

Seen it happen with dolphins and kings personally. Try not to let the fish off the gaff without getting the jig out of his mouth now.

The question is,

Why were they using a cheapo 8oz diamond jig instead of a genuine butterfly jig to match the other high dollar Shimano jigging gear?

Never seen the expensive stinger hooks employed with an old school jig. I just run siwash hooks on mine. Guess that’s why I do not catch big wahoos…

C’mon kid, siwash are better for triggers, sea bass and lethargic grouper. Siwash also like to pull out on big fish. More fish have been caught on CM220’s than all other jigs combined. the only thing those pretty “butterfly” jigs catch are fishermen. I just bought 40 hammered jigs for $100, I’ll send you a couple.

You have to use 8x owners, and your 80lb line will pop before you pull them loose. The store-made stinger assembly hooks have straightened or broken in half on me unless I used the gold owner stingers. Stopped fooling with all that though. Jigging is for people too lazy to anchor. :stuck_out_tongue:

40 for 100 is a good price. I think mine were around $5.50 each, but I bought only 3 that have lasted me 2 years at the rate I fish.
