I have international 30 wides loaded with 50-pound mono for most trolling but was thinking of getting two setups specifically for high speed subsurface for wahoo. I have two spare stand up 50-pound class rods and a bulk spool of 50-pound braid already. Question is, is anyone still running Monel these days or is braid just as effective getting the line subsurface? If braid is the preference, and with the increase in capacity with braid, would a tld25 or penn squall 60ld be suitable in size? If Monel is the direction would a 6/0 be matched up right? I don’t want to break the bank on a couple of “spare” setups just thinking it would be nice to have some specific to targeting the hoo.

If you are doing high speed sub surface, you need at least 50w with 50 or 80lb line. I use Mono and it works fine for me. I like the shock resistance it offers when a wahoo hits like a tire off a truck on the highway.
TLD25 + high speed is not a good idea.

We like to use short bent butts with 2 speed TLD50’s. You can’t beat the price on these http://pjwholesalerods.com/short-big-game-fishing-rod-80-cla80.html
We spool up the reels with 130-150# braid and then top shot them with 150# long (100’) shock leaders. A 30 cant handle the drag necessary to pull the large trolling weights.

Paul I bought one of those rods for my 50w and the reel seats don’t fit anything smaller than a 80. I took it to Haddrells and they said they couldn’t do anything about it. The reel now sits about 10 degrees to the side. Works, but annoying.

Call their customer service, they have been excellent with me, Black Angus and another friend of mine. They have replaced 2 rods that we have broken because we were idiots
