Wahoo wire leader or Mono?

I tied to do a search, but i never have much luck with that button.

When you guys are targeting Wahoo, are you using wire or mono leader?
I usually fish for Mahi, but would like try for some missles this year.

I know the bite is on fire right now. Do they stay like this all SUmmer, or they more of a clod water fish?
Thanks for the help as usual!

wire usually. you can get away with using 350-400lb mono for a leader though. they bite all year round here but of course there are peak times to catch them. darkere colored skirts seem to do best, not always though. planers are great producers to.

What do you primarily look for in targeting a hoo? Weed, water temp, ledge, depression, hump, depth??? What defines a ledge?

Hello all!

I’ve been lurking the forum for a long time now. reading and learning from all the great info posted here.

Just got a new (used boat) and tying to get into nearshore, offshore fishing. Started last year with a 17CC on jetties and nearshore reef.

Anyway, since the search button on this forum appears to not be working, the best way to search for something here, at least for me is:

Go to google.com and the type on search “site:charlestonfishing.com wahoo wire leader or mono”

This will show you all the threads containing the keywords you are searching on this forum.

Hope this helps

water temp and depth to me are most important. wahoos can be caught in the summer for sure. you want 68 degree or better water in less than 300’ others might say different but seems to be what ive learned from fishing. also 10kt seems to be a good speed sometimes faster sometimes slower. try it at one speed and change it up til you find the bite. dark skirts.

A few days before the full moon and during the full moon is always a good time, if you travel straight out on the 200 line there are some good ledges that go 165 to 185ft. I prefer wire on my planer and hi-speed rigs and just mono on the surface. But pulling wire in the entire spread isn’t a bad idea in a red hot wahoo bite. I use a mustad 7731AD 8/0 Hook on number 11 malin wire- Black head blk/pur skirt ilander.

Stay away! Those wahoos are mine!!!

Besides, “mahi mahi” are much more fun to catch, and wahoo tastes like garbage! Wouldn’t you rather catch some “mahi mahi”?

wire if you wantem in the boat…

also a trebble stinger makes a nice wire addition to the J hook…here is what i rig normally when hunting wahoo… or stick with Skinnee’s answer…

snap swivel–wire leader—to hook–(off the bottom of the hook after rigging the hoo) short 1-3 inch wire with a trebble hook in the bottom of the hoos belly or crap hole…somewhere near the last inch and running straight w/o spinning or flipping)

hope that helps you hook up more hoo

stops with all that short bite crap…

I use 100 lb flouro on all my rigs, and haven’t had a bite through yet. I know it will happen though. Guess I’ve been lucky.

“wire if you wantem in the boat…”

Agreed there! Wire with a haywire twist to hook. A second large eyed hook can be slipped over the point and barb of the first hook after it’s been inserted into ballyhoo and rubber banded towards rear of ballyhoo can help as well with short strikes, speeding up a bit to about 10 kts seems to eliminate short strikes sometimes as well it seems like.

Is anyone using 49 strand wire for a leader? I have baits rigged with 49 strand and double crimped - like you would crimp 200lb mono and not using a haywire twist. Am I wrong or just different?

I’m with you. I’ve caught plenty of hoos on 150# mono with a wire trace around the bend. Never a problem.

I’d never subject my ballyhoo to a treble stinger. You buy an expensive boat, you fill it full of ultra expensive fuel, you buy expensive rods & reels, you buy expensive baits & lures…why in the world would you compromise it all by ruining the action of your ballyhoo with a treble hook? All your effort culminates when the bait hits the water…make the most of it.
