Wallace Creek 8/23

Fished Wallace Creek in Hollywood last evening on the last hour in the incoming tide with little success. I wanted to try some topwater to see what happened. Used a Spook Jr. color was black/silver. Not even a strike. Fished it in mouths of little creeks, along banks and from grass edge back to boat. I"m going to figure this artificial thing out. Did catch a stingray under a float on live shrimp.

You need to go with optiker… He’s the pro. Wallace creek, that’s my neck of the woods. We’re on Raintowles. Caught plenty of trout near dark on a white badonkadonk. Over top of a little shell bank with moving water.

That would be great to go with optiker one day. I’ve got a lot to learn and that would be a huge head start.

23, I wanted to thank you for an entertaining morning. Got to work today and wanted to see what this “white badonkadonk” lure looked like, so I just copied and searched it without really thinking about it. My search results had nothing to do with fishing. I’m expecting my IT guy to walk into my office any moment.

Ahhhh! I have those filters on my search results, so I don’t think about things like that. That’s hilarious though.

Ha ha my wife did that once! Boy was she surprised!

Thanks for all the kind words. There are many better at it than me. I’ll share some things that work for me. I do love me some topwater. That plug above has caught me some piggys fo sho.

This fish was caught on the bone badonk

I really only throw 4 topwater plugs.

  1. Bone spook jr
  2. Mullet or trout color skitterwalk
  3. That plug above in that color
  4. Sometimes a Pop-R or chugbug

90% of the time #1 or #2 above.

This time of year is the best for topwater, IMO. The mullet run is on. Look for rafts of mullet working the banks and especially for blowups on them. You will notice that the blowups occur near grassy points (often) or near submerged oysters or anywhere where the current will push on a bank and collect hapless bait. If you run a bank with a trolling motor and you see a strike within casting distance, try to get a cast right there ASAP. You will very often hook up. It makes sense, often the initial strike is to stun and the plug landing will appear as if they knocked a bait in the air and it came landing back down - easy meal!

At high tide, the trout like to hide in the grass and ambush if there is no other obvious ambush spots, so try to cast along the grass line and work your plug within a foot of it. Another great thing to do at high tide is to look for sparse grass. Cast right into it and gently work your plug through it. If you are gentle you will be surprised that your plug will ease on through without getting hung up. It will happen occasionally though. Just grab your spool and pull easy and steady and your plug will come out. you will catch some big reds this way (and trout). Yes, early or late is best but this time of year I think you can catch em all day when the bait is rafted up like it is. Last tip for now. Cadence. I like to work it slow. Vary the tempo. Thin

That’s ^^ gold

Thanks optiker. Sounds like some great advise. I hope I can pick up a gator like that soon.

its all starting to make sense! Thanks Opti

If you ain’t retie’n, you aint try’n…

Holy fishing tips Optiker, you are a god among men, this is probably the best advice I’ve gotten. On Saturday I was fishing an oyster bed in the Ashley and there was bait EVERYWHERE. I was fishing a popping cork in around 3 feet of water with a MM on the bottom. No bites on the minnow, but at one point something big hit the actual popping cork and took it under. Guess next time I’ll take that as a sign to switch to topwater.

Something else I observed this summer. I have a flat with a school of reds that I like to fish. In the summer they are really keyed in on little shrimp, just gorging themselves on them by blasting them occasionally. Naturally a big plug is not “matching the hatch”. If I made a random cast and worked the plug back to the boat they wouldn’t show interest. But if they just made a big crash after the shrimp, if I cast immediately right on top of the spot they just crashed they would hit it as a reaction bite. Try it. It works

Great tips Optiker! Quick question, what do you do, if anything, about gulls picking up your top water. Last time I tried running a spook they went into a feeding freezy and every cast would get picked up by a gull, flown a little ways, then dropped for the next bird to take up. It was like a game of keep away. Luckily I didn’t catch any but it made the fishing tough.

JLee. If only a few birds just yank it right before they go for it. If a lot of birds I wait a minute and they will sometimes fly away. They can be a pia. Maybe switch to a jig or suspending lure. Sooner or later you will hook one. Just gently reel them in and control their head while you gently free the hook. They will usually be no worse for the wear. Had it happen a handful of times. It’s amazing how light birds are. Hard to appreciate till you hold one.
