Wambaw drive thru

Not exactly a hunting report - but sort of. I made the trip to Carolina Seafood for a box of shrimp recently. Made a detour thru the Wambaw section of the FM. Driving slowly down the roc roads to see what was stirring. I stopped by an old sand pit pond to check out the frog situation - counted over 40 big bullfrogs, and almost stepped on a very healthy cottonmouth. Gave him a pass. He was there before I was. Amazing how you cant spot the frogs in daylight but you can at night.

Continued down the road - Saw some movement in the road ahead - It was a bunch of young turkeys I slowly drove up and they totally ignored me - they were pecking at a cane break rattler and chased it into the woods. They were about 1/2 the size of a frying chicken and they could move fast! I hope they make it to mature birds. Then I saw a young pig cross close in front of me I stopped and I could hear the young’un squealing and in a minute here comes a 150# sow with 5 15 LB pigs at her side. They were at least 3rd generation feral hogs - solid black. Shortly after they crossed 3 coyotes eased across looking for pork chops! I drove by a patch of woods I have enjoyed hunting for years - a section of long leaf pines and saw a huge eastern diamond back rattler going along the roadside. nice drive. I’m getting my frog gig sharp for action tonight. Anybody hunting the FM needs to help out by knocking down the coyotes & hogs. If you shoot the sow first , the pigs will stay and you can kill them all. Fun drive!

I haven’t been thru Wambaw in a while, how were the roads? I noticed they were fixing up the roads in Santee some lately. And glad you didn’t kill the snakes,I don’t shoot every one I see either, like I once did.

I never kill the snakes in the FM I don’t know if the laws have changed , but it used to be illegal to kill a snake there. The roads were better than I expected , Some of the intersections were a little rough , and some of the roadways that get overflowed by streams were a little bumpy - but very passible. Most of the roads looked like they were recently maintained. You can see lots of wildlife there right after a rain. especially if you slow down and sometimes stop and use your binocs Everything is moving when the rain stops
