Put the kayak in around 7:30 this morning to target Sheephead. A bunch of misses at first as expected until I got the feeling back. There wasn’t a lot of size to most of the 12 I got to the boat. I lost the two largest fish right out of net reach. I ended up bringing 4 home. I was lucky to get those to the boat because the cheap hooks I was using fell right out! Next time I’ll be better prepared with some Owner’s. I decided to try trout and Reds around 11am and ended up catching a couple under size trout. I finished my day by trolling a couple jigs (Electric Chicken and Opening Night) and got my single Red that way. I guess it is still a little early for trolling?
Nice catches Ivy. Definitely not too early for trolling. My buddy and I typically troll anytime we are paddling and come across a lot of trout. The trolling bite is definitely on!

Ivy,
Nice catch !
I’ve never caught a sheepshead, but understand they fight like hell and are good eating to boot.
Love to give it a go. Were you fishing near the bridge abutments and can you tell me the bait of choice ?
Thanks for your advice.
Becasue I’m sure I’m not the only one that utilizes this drop in so it’s better to communicate this information privatly. I’ll happily send you the same PM.

Yes, they are challenging and fun to catch. I caught these fishing right around the bridge supports using Fiddler crabs.
How did you secure your kayak to the bridge? With the tides moving, I know that this can be a real challenge.
I attempted it once at the HHI bridge, but with the water moving more than 8 feet in a tidal swing, the currents are really tough. A power boat is much easier to work with since you have a firm platform to stand on while grabbing ahold of the column and swinging a rope around it.

Definatly have to be careful but I put my kayak between two uprights at an angle where my paddle that is across my lap and the bow of the kayak are kind of wedged between the uprights. Not really something I can explain in words. You don’t want to try it on the big tides!.
FYI. That bridge is scheduled to be replaced soon. Plans are for a 55’ bridge. The new bridge will be located next to the old on the upstream side. The old bridge will be taken down once the new bridge is open to traffic.
