I decided to go do a little early morning fishing on the Wando yesterday and see if the topwater bite was still going strong. I had quite a few blow ups and follows but nothing of any size seemed to want to bite and hold on. I picked up 4 small trout on top before the bite turned off.
The finger mullet have been running hard lately and the redfish have been responding well even during the heat of the day to live or cut mullet. It only took there throws of the cast net to fill the bucket up with all the live shrimp and fingers I was going to need for the day. I started out trying to fish three rods but that didn’t last very long. Before I could even get the second rod in the water it was fish on!!! After a short but spirited fight I landed my first red of the day at 25". I did manage to get all three rods in the water a few minutes later only to regret doing so. They all went off about the same time!![:0] After dealing with that mess and only landing two out of the three fish I decided it would be safer to switch to two rods. For the next couple hours I continued to get bites every ten minutes or so. I ended up with 19 reds between 19-32" and lost several more.
After the reds stopped biting I decided to start trying for flounder to complete my slam. It took a little while longer to find them but I managed to pick up 4 flatties and 10 or so more smaller trout before calling it a day at 1230. The water temps have dropped a good bit from what they were and the water is also finally starting to clear up.
