Wando river 6/12/11

Hit the Wando early yesterday. First spot was by the terminal, we trolled it for some trout but drove into a unexpected oyster bed? Trolled there many times and that never happened. We scared everything with the motor, so we left. Headed up the river and fished with yo-zuri ures, Zman paddle tails with no luck. Went up to the 41 bridge, got bait (shrimp) and when we went to a honey hole in he upper wando and had out shrimps being cut in half, bluefish? Caught one red there, a little rat red on a shrimp under a cork. All in all not much luck, I guess we need to use live bait more and less artificial lures. We are going to get a guide soon to learn summer fishing.

“In every species of fish I’ve angled for, it is the ones that have got away that thrill me the most, the ones that keep fresh in my memory. So I say it is good to lose fish. If we didn’t, much of the thrill of angling would be gone.” Ray Bergman

The wando used to be my go to area to fish, but there is just too much pressure there now and we dont seem to do as well as we did in previous years. I have fished many of the same spots of mine for years and always did well with trout and reds in the double digits, the past year or so it hasnt been near as good. Been exploring other areas more had having good success.

As for summer fishing fish early or late in the day when it is not as hot. Focus on structure such as docks, rocks, rubble, oyster beds and drops with deeper water near by, as it gets hotter in the day the reds move to deeper areas adjacent to structure usually on the down current side and will also be cruising the edge of the grass as the water is rising before they can get up in the grass.
