Wando River Night Fishing_6/28/19

Hit the Wando last night with a handful of lures and some larger sized mud minnows. Started off drift fishing some banks with oyster bars and drop offs that i typically fish in the daytime. I was pitching an array of colors and profiles, from all black lures to white, sparkly silver paddle tails, bright chartreuse top-waters and jerk shads. Meanwhile, i could hear/see bait fish busting the surface all around me, but couldn’t manage a bite on artificial in the dark, tried throwing a few live minnows…still no success. At one point i could see my rod tip twitching and main line traveling in the opposite direction of the current, i let it sit for a minute before reeling in, turns out my minnow was untouched, my best guess is thst a predator was close by and the minnow was trying to flee. 1:00am and frustrated i decided to hit a dock that i occasionally catch reds at during low tide. Threw a mud minnow out on a 1/4oz sinker in front of a dock of about 4-5’ depth and ended up catching a few reds, (1) 10", (1) 12" and the largest being close to 21".

Going out the 11th at night with my two green lights.

I love fishing from my kayak at night. I had allot of trouble finding out what drum liked to feed on at night. I worked at night fishing for quite a while before realizing that big live bait and cut bait work best for me at night. I’ve also found that you will almost always find sharks near the schools of reds and sometimes loose one to a shark at night. A little more so than in the day for obvious reasons. I’ve had a shark torpedo 5’ out of the water on a nice fish and all I could say was where’s my tackle box. Keep fishing my friend and please be safe out there at night.
