Just an FYI to be careful on the lake around the towers and the dam tomorrow … Looks like there’s going to be a lot of bodies in the water and with rainy conditions it could make viability problematic …

Dam Swim for Drew Saturday!

Come out and support the LHS Swim Team as they host the 16th Annual Dam Swim for Drew tomorrow! This is a 2 mile open water swim across the Lake Murray Dam in memory of Drew Smith who was killed by a drunk boater on Lake Murray.

Drew’s Law now makes it illegal to drink while operating a boat in South Carolina. It’s not too late to register and swim over 300 swimmers are expected and many make the trip annually from across the USA a big event in the national swim world for years!

However, you are correct … it is not illegal to drink alcohol while operating a boat - but you cannot be impaired …

SC Code:

SECTION 50-21-112. Operation of moving motorized water device or water device under sail while under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol; offense; penalties.

(A) It is unlawful for a person to operate a moving motorized water device or water device undersail upon the waters of this State while under the:

(1) influence of alcohol to the extent that the person’s faculties to operate are materially and appreciably impaired;

(2) influence of any other drug or a combination of other drugs or substances which cause impairment to the extent that the person’s faculties to operate are materially and appreciably impaired; or

(3) combined influence of alcohol and any other drug or drugs, or substances which cause impairment to the extent that the person’s faculties to operate are materially and appreciably impaired.

I feel for anyone who has suffered a loss from someone being careless and stupid, this includes being drunk behind the wheel of anything, boat or car.
But I cannot get on board for a law that prohibits drinking on a boat at all. That will be a sad day if that ever becomes a reality.
One of life’s simple pleasures is putting around the lake at sunset with an adult beverage in hand knowing you aren’t doing anything illegal. Don’t try that on the road!
