Is it really necessary to post the same thing on two different threads?

Didn’t we do this last month?

Wild cougars and panthers don’t exist in SC. I know, I know, your cousin’s best friend saw one at 3am on his way home from the bar on that back road that is rarely traveled.

Thats Not true.
On hickory Hill Hunting Club around 1995 the dnr brought panther to the hunting club and they put tracking systems on them. Researchers from Virginia tech would study them and their habitats in South Carolina. They have since multiplied and you see quite a few in Colleton County.

I dont think you know what your talking about. Panthers exist in South Carolina. Just come to Colleton County and ask anybody. The reason you don’t see people killing them is because of the huge fines they will receive. Why its not publicized is becaus ethe dnr dont want people killing them.

I may not know what I am talking about; however, I still do not think that there are panthers ( especially black ones) in South Carolina.I do not need to come to Colleton county, I can stay right in Charleston and run into plenty of people that claim to have seen them. Most of these people are the type that would shoot one if given the chance. There are big fines for shooting Bald Eagles also, but every few years some dumb a** gets caught for killing one.

Well someone did actually kill on on Hickory Hill. In fact I will try and find out if there is a photo of it and I will place it on here. Its been a few years since I hunted there but I will look. I will say this. Any that is here was brought here. They was’nt born or raised here. People say we dont have bears either. But there was one in walterboro and one in branchville a couple years back.

flyinghigh, i addressed this issue a year ago and no one is willing to take the ball and run with a kill of a black panther in the ranks I live with either. I for one will shoot the first I see to prove they do exist. Pics of Bobcats dont do it for me. I for one know black panthers do NOT exist on North America. A black phase of the Puma does exist but not for many years in SC. And I will bring it home first time I see it…NOT in alive state…Im killing it first.

If the Carolina pnther still existed the Carolina Parakeet is on a comeback also.

Bears and black panthers are two totally different subjects. Black bears show up on trail cams all of the time, I have pictures of one on the first of august. A black panther has never been killed anywhere in the U.S much less South Carolina. Margaret Jane, I agree if i see one it will be shot ( not really worried about having to make that choice though).

Black bears are here…I have no problem with them…I will pay the fine for killing a South African cat in South Carolina that swam the Atlantic ocean to get here. It just didnt happen. Black panthers are not here…Come on guys.

Margaret Jane, I am with you…it will be ground checked to settle this BS once and for all!

Just think this way…1 you kill a black panther…2 you go to court for killing a black panther…3 you tell the judge they are native to Africa…

Is Dnr going to say they were wrong and change the charge to spotted panther that roamed from South America or would they simply hit you first thing with North American Puma?

If I was the officer I would do the latter and not be the laughing stock in the papers for chargeing someone for takeing an animal that naturally does not live on this continent.

Just my 2 cents worth.

DonaldBreland, You are absolutely correct when saying that panthers do exist in South Carolina. I hunted in Huger, SC as a kid. Our property bordered the FM, North Hampton unit. I was told that many years ago there were panthers running wild on the property. I never witnessed one in person.

It was’nt until last year that I saw my first one. I have two still hunting clubs and have seen several bobcats. Last year while scouting on one of the tracks, I witnessed a black panther walking down a trail just off of my property line. I told a few people about it and got mixed comments. Some people do not believe they exist. But I know what I saw.

It wasnt until a week ago that one of my members called me and said that he had an interesting story for me. He was sitting in his stand when a big doe walked up on his corn pile. She imediately stopped in her tracks and began to walk backwards. How many people have seen a doe walk backwards? This is not common he thought. It was if she was trying to sneak away.

He picked up his binnoculars and began to scan the area. All he could see was a rabbit feeding. Moments later he saw the bushes move and zoomed in on the object. It was a black panther with a 3 foot tail. This cat was spotted again within 500 yards of the spot I saw him last year. The cat was stalking the rabbit and doe.

He thought about shooting the cat but they are protected by federal laws. He fired a shot off before he left because

Well another black panther seen that was not shot. Did this cougar become black after escaping from captivity?
