Was tired of catching slot reds so...

decided to do a little kayak sharkin yesterday. Put in a Copahee and paddled out close to the inlet in search of bonnets and maybe a spinner.
Wind was a beast and the water looked like chocolate milk.

Managed a stingray, a decent bonnethead, and then got freight trained by something bigger than the bonnet. It took one run, I turned it and regained about 50 yards of line, then it turned again. On the second run it spooled my 4000 Penn Battle in about 6 seconds and POP GOES THE LEADER.

Here’s the highlight vid of the bonnet.

Bummer, it would have been nice to at least see what it was. How do you like your Battle? I am getting one in the next week or so. Don’t really need one but I was offered a great deal so I thought I would try one. Was wavering between a 3000 and 4000 but think I will go with the 4000.

I really like the Battle. I have a Battle, Sargus, and a Fierce all 4000 series. All 3 are built on the same frame and each one is what I’d call a “best buy” in their respective price points. Each increase in price gives you an additional bearing and drag performance improvement.

I wrote an article comparing several different spinning reels under $100 for one of the “big” kayak magazines. I guess it’s still sitting on a shelf, because I haven’t seen it in print.
