Looking for input on wash down pumps I have had to buy a couple in the years and now another looking for durability and long term .Currently running a Jabsco Par-Max4.Which are yall running and how many hours or seasons have yall had on them.
Kirk, I use the Shurflo, Blaster. Durability depends on flushing the pump with fresh water after the trips. 95% of the pumps that I have taken apart failed due to corrosion, or just plain salt build-up in the veins or baffie’s. (I think that’s how its spelled.)
Don’t mean to steal this post, but I have a wash down question.
I have a single seacock that tees into the live well and wash down pumps. When I first put the boat in the water, the washdown pump works fine; but if I turn on the live well pump first, or turn the wash down pump off then back on, I can’t get it to work again. Not until I pull the boat out of the water and both pumps drain.
I guess that I’m getiing a “bubble” somewhere, but it’s aggravating for the wash down not to work when I need it.
Next time this happens, try disconnecting the hose from the washdown connection. Especially if you have the curly style hose. It is hard for it to prime without the water pressure pushing. The hose can cause too much restriction.
I just replaced mine with a Shurflo, I looked at all the brands(Shurflo was what was on the boat from factory). I picked one up at BW for half price when they were closing. I did look at other brands but I figured it was easier to replace with what was already there for me anyway

Bring on the 2-3 chop!
Tried that. I have a shut-off at the hose connection. I’ve tried closing that, but it still doesn’t get the pump to pump.
I think that it’s draining back toward the seacock, and somehow that’s causing the problem. I think if I leave the washdown pump switch on all the time. It’ll continue to pump. I’ll try that next time. I may also try forcing water back through the pump bacwards from either the live well or fresh water washdown and see if it’ll prime that way.
You don’t want to close it to get the pump to prime. Pumps push water well, air not so good. Leave the shut off open, but remove hose to try to get the pump to push the air out until it can get some water, then it should take off.

How is that different from leaving the hose attached, but the nozzle open?

Yeah, but do you consider a dog to be a filthy animal? I wouldn’t go so far as to call a dog filthy but they’re definitely dirty. But, a dog’s got personality. Personality goes a long way.
