Water Clarity

How long does it take for the water to clear up in the rivers? Or has it already cleared up. Wanting to make a trip down but don’t have any confidence in the muddy water. Thanks for the info.

Are you talking about the Congaree and Saluda? Clarity depends on a lot of factors. Right now the Saluda has been off color, but sceg has been running water so it could clear up by this weekend. The Broad and Congaree are mainly affected by upstream runoff. It would be helpful if USGS had a clarity or turbidity measurement for rivers on their website.

I went across the big and little Saluda at the upper end of lake murray this week on hwy 391. they were extremely muddy. as a matter of fact I saw a 20# blue cat at big man’s landing getting a drink of water out of the garden hose.

Thanks, I am talking about the little and big Saluda. Yeah Coolbreeze, I heard last weekend it looked like tomato soup. Do you think they will run enough water to pull it on thru the lake or will it have to settle out?

The good news is that all of the fish I know about last Saturday were caught below the real bad mud. Might be good to find where it is now and just fish a little below it this week. It will be moving up as it settles. Seems that stained is alright but they don’t like chocolate.

Joby

They are running the a lot of water through the lake now, almost 10,000 CFS. Problem is the water pulling in is the mud from greenwood. You could just fish down around the elbow, it should be good there. I went out in the wind last friday and marked a good many fish in Hollow. They seemed to be holding deeper in 40’. Disappeared with the sun. Caught 2 shorts on a lit dock before the wind chased us off.

The elbow area is still looking like chocolate milk. I would plan on fishing several miles below the elbow if you want to catch anything!! It might be OK if you put in at Larry Koon landing on Shull island or at Billy Dreher on the Chapin side. I’ve heard rumors of some stripers being caught near the dam, and I saw gulls working the area in front of the towers last Saturday afternoon.

Sorry Guys I am not familiar with the elbow are. Where is that located? I have put in at Dreher Island and in Buffalo Creek before.

usually when it is like this it starts to clear up where the rivers split up around spinners or what we used to call lake murray shores.

Sounds like you should fish below dreher Island. The elbow is where the river chanel turns a sharp 90* up by Buffalo Creek

The Elbow is between Buffalo Creek and Rocky Creek.
