I know this has been discussed before, but I feel we need to take action. If you haven’t noticed, people anchoring their non-seaworthy eyesore boats in the river is not just contained to the Charleston Marina area. They are now taking up space by the WO Thomas boat ramp. It started out as one sailboat, that would drift over to the dock on incoming high tide to now around 9 boats, one of which has since sunk and another laying on its side in the mud at low tide. Most of these boats do not have the proper lighting on them after dark, making them a deadly water hazard. Others seem to float around until they sink.
I think it is past time for us to band together and stop this practice of dumping your crap in the river and forgetting about it. Does anyone know who we can call to get this addressed?
I feel that if these people are allowed to leave their boats anchored like this to avoid costly marina fees, they should at least be required to carry insurance, keep their boat registration current and have the proper lighting on board allowing other boaters to avoid collision on those dark nights. Maybe the city/county can generate some revenue by charging a fee to do this to help pay for additional DNR officers to keep up with compliance… It’s just ashamed that our beautiful waterways are being littered with a boat junkyard…
A bad day fishing is much better than a good day at work.
We should group together, drag those boats from the water and dump them on their front yards.
Be sure to rip the hull up good so they cant put them back.
I’m sure we have a few attorneys on here. We can write up a salvage bill and let them go at it.

You can report them to SC-DHEC using the online form here: http://www.scdhec.gov/HomeAndEnvironment/Water/CoastalManagement/MarineDebrisAbandonedVessel/.
If it has visible registrations numbers, and you feel it is abandoned, report it to SCDNR at 843-953-9307.
