Water in fuel

Do bad things happen if you use methanol to dry the gas in your boat’s fuel tank? Remembering the old gas dry we used to use in cars.

Need more info. Are you using ethanol or non ethanol gas? How much water are you talking about? Do you have fuel water separators? What kind of engine do you have?

Flirting with disaster. If you have water in your fuel, I’d suggest… assuming an outboard with a squeeze bulb…

With the boat on the trailer, adjust it to be a little bow up. The fuel pickup should be near the rear of the fuel tank. Let it sit long enough for any separated water to run to the lowest point in the tank.

Disconnect the connection from the fuel hose to the motor so that you are left with a length of hose down stream/after the squeeze bulb.

Pump the squeeze bulb into a clear container. You should see water. If you don’t??? I don’t know. Water is not the problem or your fuel pickup is not in the rear portion of your fuel tank.

Hopefully, you just have a few cups of water in the tank. If so, a few minutes of pumping should clear it.

Reconnect the final fitting on the fuel line and reattach to the motor.

If you don’t have a spin on type water separating filter with a sight bowl, install one. If you still have a little water in the tank, you’ll see it accumulate in the sight bowl. Then, you just drain off any that accumulates.

I went through this about two years ago. For a few trips, I’d drain about a teaspoon of water from the bowl. Since then, no problems. If you ever see any water in the site bowl, it is a two minute chore to drain it. The motor never sees water and stays happy.

outboard 95 200 Yamaha. Cleared bowl of water and changed cartridge. Ran fine for a while and problem returned. Checked bowl and drained small amount this time. ran ok and then time for SeaTow. I have raised bow and pumped out 25 gallons of fuel. No water. Ran back to Greenville using it in car. How much might accumulate under the pick up and be sucked up as I run rough water.

Will change filter again and the under cowling filter this weekend and if this doesn’t work it’s Chris V time I guess.

Yes ethanol gas and I use Stabil.

Thanks

A follow up to my fuel trouble. Another new filter and a new primer bulb and cutting away an inch of fuel line where I found pin holes and the old Yamaha is running well. I guess the old bulb was also leaking air and starving the engine.
