I have a 1990 Evinrude 70 hp (E70TLE) that I replaced the water pump on the other day because it wasn’t peeing strong. When I started it, there was a ton of water gushing out of the lower unit holes and the exhaust, but nothing from the tell tale. I took off the thermostat cover and there’s no water in there. I blew through the hose and it blew exhaust smoke out of the crankcase and thermostat hole, so I know it’s not clogged.
Before I take the gearcase back off, do you think it’s something simple like it didn’t line up to the water pipe when I re-installed the gearcase? I don’t know what else it could be.
I bet your dead on. Failed to line up/connect the water pump out tot the up pipe. Its not hard to drop the lower unit if you just had it off, < 20 min to drop it.

Thanks, guys. I dropped it again and sure enough, the pipe wasn’t lined up!

That would do it, too. Chris has done way more of these than I have. I’d follow his suspicions, first.
