My Yamaha 150 four stroke is 7 years old , i keep it in top notch condition. Is it time to change the water pump , i’ve heard if it’s not giving you any problems leave it alone.

According to yamaha and there maintenance page in the owners manual it should be changed every 200 hours. I change mine other year no matter what. Remember the impeller inside is just rubber and can dry rot. If you have not changed yours in 7 years I would say you are on borrowed time and get it done. It is easy to do yourself. Biggest b!tch is removing the woodruff key. After you get that out is is easy. Here is a great link with pics to show you how to do it.
I change every other year unless I’ve put it across a few mud or sand flats. Then I will change it sooner. I also change the impeller housing along with the impeller. If you do it yourself make sure to anti-seize every bolt. Also change your foot oil while your at it.
I run across mud and sand flats on about every inshore trip I make. The pump is often pumping more mud than water I change my impeller and pump housing every year, as well as changing the gear lube. The whole water pump kit cost less than $50 and I can change it in an hour if I take my time. Grease all the bolts, grease the prop shaft, grease everything.
I can’t imagine waiting 7 years. You will be lucky to get the bolts out after 7 years if it’s been in salt water all that time. If the prop hasn’t been off in 7 years, it won’t be easy either. Good luck with that.

I did my first one tonight, also on a F150. That woodruff key was a pain. After working at it for 15 minutes I said to hell with that, went to Home Depot and bought a pair of end nippers. Had the key out in 10 seconds after that.

if you use the boat in saltwater, DO NOT USE anti seize
it was copper in it, and it will cause worse galvanic corrosion
just use good ole fashioned blue grease
change the waterpump every 2 years
get the repair kit and it comes with the stainless cup, gaskets, impeller, and everything u need
