Heading to Wateree for a few hours mid day tomorrow. Any advice on general location, depth, bait, etc. would be super appreciated. I have a couple of big magnum spoons and don’t know of anywhere to get herring out that way. I usually fish Murray and don’t really know anything about Wateree in the summer. I’ve caught them up towards midlake in the spring, but figured tomorrow I would try around the dam.
Wateree can be very challenging in the summer. I have seen them from one end to the other, schooling and sitting on the bottom on 40-50FOW. There aren’t any herring in Wateree so the BP Magnum might be overkill, but would be worth a shot. and yea no bait shops on the lake, so bring your own. let us know how it goes.
We fished out of Colonels creek this morning using herring from Jimmy Jones. The first rod I baited & dropped to 20’ was hit by right off by a striper. After that, we could not get any more hits except for catfish. Had 1 cat about 12 lbs & the rest smaller. Tried several more places down from Colonels creek but nothing but catfish.
Caught most of the cats(about 12 total) drifting in 20 to 25’.
Wateree advice? Go to Lake Murray instead. Big pool on humps and underwater points 75’+. Just look for them on your sonar and spot-lock. Don’t mess with those fish around 25’-40’, generally small.
