Waxing a boat

What brand of wax would you recommend. How often does a boat need waxing ?

I put two coats of wax on my boat last winter and it looked good until last month. Needs some cleaning and waxing again.

I will try to remember to look in the garage at what I used.

18’ Hewes Bayfisher/115 4 Stroke Yamaha/6’Powerpole, etc

I have been using a polish from Bass pro that has PETF (Teflon I believe) and it has held up surprisingly well. I waxed it in June and noticed water still beading up last weekend when I washed it down. I would imagine most polishes with Teflon will work about the same.

Clean it with collinite #920, and wax with two coats of collinite #870 liquid fleetwax. Hard work but well worth it in the long run

collinite is the deal

Thanks, Collinate was the responce I got on another thread so I will try it. Who sells it in the area or is it something I will have to get on line???

+1 for Collinite. I use these products daily. Start with a good washdown followed by #920 fiberglass cleaner and either #925 liquid wax or #885(fleetwax-paste). West Marine usually has them in stock.

I generally tell my clients at least once a year if not twice. Some are on a three month rotation, just a new layer of wax…Using a buffer with the cleaner works well. Hand apply the wax with a microfiber cloth.

I’ve got an old “98” Seahunt I bought new and have never waxed. Is the collinite cleaner about like compound for an old car. Can you buy the collinite products in the Charleston area? Thanks

You can’t catch fish on a dry line

You can get Collinite from West Marine. However, if your boat is a 98 and has never been waxed I guess without seeing it would be a hard compounding before any wax. And no the cleaner is a liquid with no grit. 3M’s super duty is great stuff as is their Imperial compound and finishing material.

Can you do all of this through this time of year? Is it not too cold this time of year to do it outside?

Should you wax a brand new boat…say one that was delivered and was made in the past month?

Woody Wax the new boat. works on nonskid also. spray on, wipe around, let dry, then hose off. done

Yes you can wax boats thus time a year. Temperature does affect application though. Above 50 degrees seems to make it a lot easier to work with. As far as applying a coat of wax on new boats. Yes. Most boats get buffed before leaving the factory but it never hurts to stay on top of maintenance. If new I would clean with soap and water then apply a wax, like collinite no 925.
