We heady out into a slightly sloppy sea around 4:30am on Thursday. Jeremiah (Firefighterj80 on here) and I took out some friends from the upstate. I knew the ride back would be wet, but the allure of the deep was just too strong (and I really didn’t want to go into the office). I’ll take a beating from the sea over an 8 hour wrestle with spreadsheets and TPS reports most any day.
It was a pretty slow day overall. We trolled out to the 226 in search of bills, but none showed up. There were several nice color changes and semi-formed weed lines, but there weren’t many fish on them. The current was also ripping out there-probably as strong as I’ve seen it this year. Water temps were 81.8-82.7 out there.
Landed a nice gaffer dolphin (18-20lbs) and a handful of peanuts.
Trolling back in through 400ft, the planer rod goes off and I instantly knew we’d struck gold. A monster slob of a wahoo was alongside about 15 min later. A stoner gaff shot put her down quickly and into the ice she went. It’s amazing how beautiful they are when they’re lit up, especially an 80lb hog like this one.
It was a wet ride home, but the day maker hoo made it worth the beating.
You’ll never forget a big wahoo. I’d rather catch a big wahoo than a bill any day. They can make incredible runs and the way they shake their heads can throw that hook any second. They light up so pretty!
Ive read this thread , and don’t let anyone tell you how to post. I’m glad you did!
