We Schooled the School

A buddy and I went out early morning Monday to try and find some reds and trout. We set out into what felt like subzero temperatures even with plenty of layers on. First stop on the front end of the incoming with water temp of 57, we found a few trout, nothing with any size. Moved around a little looking for some fish, spooked a small school of reds and they wouldn’t eat. Moved again, no luck. Checked a couple of places as the tide rose and the fish seemed to be frozen to the bottom and not wanting to eat. Went to a cove that we had luck fishing in the past. Slowly letting the tide push us forward, we saw a school of reds, I cast out and reeled quickly to them, watched the red look at my lure, and slowly bounced my Slim Swimz in Blue Steel twice and he inhaled it, fish on! That school spooked and on we went. Found a grass line that ran perpendicular to a dock, first cast with a Slim Swimz in greasy prawn and my buddy was hooked up. I immediately cast when I saw there was a school, and I was hooked up as well using my Slimz in Blue Steel. Needless to say we found some studs because my fish came off and when my lure got back to the boat, the hook was sideways. I switched immediately to my new favorite, Zman Swimming Trout Trick in fried chicken paired with EyeStrike jig head(3/16oz) in pearl. We saw several fish shoot off in different directions and knew we were in a large school. The bite would stop, so we would circle to the other side of the dock and then it would be on again. Doubles multiple times. If the fish stopped biting, we would just move to the other side and the action would pick back up. We must have pulled 25+ reds off one dock, none smaller than 22". All fish were tagged and released, with the biggest of the day at 30". Left the fish biting but had to get home. Also caught a couple on a silver spoon(first for me) as well as a flounder to round out the slam. Slow morning turned into an amazing afternoon.

Happy to do it. It’s always interesting to see where the fish end up and how big they’ve gotten

What a day! I love those reds when they’re that nice bronze color.

Nice fish, looks like your fishing out of a Express, I just bought a H22B, how do you like yours?

Nice bunch of reds right there!

Mako, I fish out of a Pioneer 197 SF. I was in my buddy’s Express H22B. He just got it a couple months ago and seems to be a pretty good platform.

Fatrat, yes sir it was. We tried to find them again yesterday but the king tides had them pushed out of their usual hangouts. Still managed 15 reds, a flounder and over 30 trout between the two of us, all on artificials.
